Bangkok has laws governing egg donation in Bangkok, however, they do not apply to commercial egg donations (egg donation for profit is prohibited in Bangkok). Moreover, recipients of donated eggs are not permitted to receive eggs from more than one donor during a single treatment.
The patient who needs to donate eggs will have to present her marriage license and get her husband to sign a consent letter. A letter of permission must also be signed by the egg donor.
Who can become an Egg Donor in Bangkok?
Qualifications for egg donation in Bangkok include:
- 20 to 35 years of age minimum
- passing a test for physical and mental health
- has to be from the same country as the receiver of the egg
- A letter of permission must be signed by the egg donor’s spouse.
- has never donated eggs more than three times in her lifetime
- Information on egg donors will be kept on file for 20 years.
Does Bangkok allow sperm donation?
In Bangkok, sperm donation is permitted; however, commercial sperm donation is prohibited (sperm donation for profit is prohibited in Bangkok). Donated sperm may be used for insemination (whether natural or artificial) or as part of IVF treatment.
The patient who needs to donate sperm must present her marriage license and both she and her husband must sign consent letters. A letter of consent must also be signed by the sperm donor. Additionally, a child can only be conceived by the sperm donor with a maximum of 10 families.
Qualifications for sperm donors include:
- 20 to 45 years of age minimum
- passing a test for physical and mental health
- A letter of authorization must be signed by the donor’s spouse.
- Must not be related to the receiver of the sperm
- No prior drug abuse history
- Nothing sexually transmitted in the past
- No family history of genetic disorders
- No prior history of infectious infections, such as HIV/AIDS
- Before the sperm is used in the procedure, the sperm donor must consent to being tested for HIV/AIDS at the time the sample is submitted and again six months later.
Egg freezing options in Bangkok

- If a wife wants to use her deceased husband’s sperm, she needs to get his written authorization.
- Sperm stored more than five years after the husband’s death cannot be used.
- After the husband’s passing, the Ministry of Public Health (Bangkok) must be reported if frozen sperm is used.
What rules govern the freezing of embryos legally?
The following are the legal conditions for freezing embryos:
- A couple must be lawfully wed in order to freeze their embryos.
- A letter of consent must be signed by the husband and wife ahead of embryo freezing.
- The duo must go through a health examination for communicable diseases.
- Detecting “infected” from “uninfected” embryos using screening (e.g., HIV/non-HIV infected)
- A husband or wife needs to get written authorization if they want to use embryos after their partner has passed away.
- After a spouse’s death, the Ministry of Public Health (Bangkok) must be notified if frozen embryos are used.
- After a spouse’s passing, embryos maintained for more than five years cannot be used.
Does Bangkok offer pre-implantation genetic testing?
Pre-implantation genetic testing is legal in Bangkok and typically performed in the following circumstances:
- The woman is older than 35 years old.
- If the woman experienced more than two miscarriages or abortions before 12 weeks of pregnancy
- Couples who have experienced recurring miscarriages
- Unusual genetics
- has made two efforts in a row to get pregnant via IVF without success.
- has already given birth to a child with birth problems
- There is cause to suspect that there is an abnormality in the embryo.
